Track Trainer: 1977 Honda MT125R

This 1977 Honda MT125R ran competitively with AHRMA as recently as a few years ago and now needs some freshening to be track-ready again. An additional machined engine and extra fiberglass panels are included with the sale. Racing one of these on slicks and spokes is a noisy rush. Find it here on eBay in Forestville, California with one day to go and no reserve.

The 125 two-stroke looks nice and complete given that it was only really used as an office conversation piece the last few years.

The seller did source an original sales brochure and manual from Singapore that will go with the bike. We have never seen one of these before.

There are some interesting on-bike videos of old and new MT125R’s on track. Most are buzzy and shaky, which makes for bad videos but likely a true representation of the experience.

  1. The question is does it have the close ratio gear box it originally came with or the wide ratio box from the CR125 as so many have ended up with. I had one for a few years that I bought for George Montgomery, the 3rd place finisher in the Daytona 200 in 1965 ahead of Gary Nixon and Dick Mann, to race in AHRMA. Unfortunately, that endeavor ended in a helicopter ride from Beaver Run. I wouldn’t mind one of these in my living room for display as well.

The CR125 had a WIDE ratio gearbox? The one I raced in District 36 flat-track (and a little motocross) back in the late ’70s sure felt close-ratio to me – but that might just have been by comparison to the Yamaha AT-1 I was moving up from ;^)

    The MT125 sure is a sweet-looking little one-lung tiddler!

  3. Okay, the term ‘bolide’ comes to mind when I see this bike.

  4. Raced one of these in the last few years of the late, great Westwood. Unbelievable amounts of fun. If I remember correctly a cable operated front disk but not really needed given this bike was all about carrying as much (of the little) speed you could at all times. I sold my much crashed and grenaded bike for $500 in the late ’80′s to a guy that I’m sure still has a stash of them. He also had a first gen RS125 (’81?).

    I miss Westwood.

  5. Damn!! Sold my last one in that was in boxes in 1998 for $800 I think (of course it was only two boxes maybe – not a lot to these). $5500??!! Damn…
